Beside the Bird's Nest, the clamor is for tickets. There are seasoned black marketeers here, but mostly the vedors are ordinally people trying to make a reasonable mark-up. The face value of the tickets for tomorrow night's 100 meters final is 800 RMB, or just over £60.

鳥の巣の周辺では、チケットを売り買いする大きな声が飛び交っています。ここには経験豊かなプロのダフ屋もいますが、ほとんどの売り手はそこそこの利ざやを稼ぎたいと思っている一般の人々です。明日の100メートル決勝のチケットは、額面では800元、60ポンド（1万2千円）です。（・・・・そのあとの値段のやり取りでは、2枚で3,000元と言っています）

It was said the tickets were sold out coming into this Olimpic games, but in reality, it has been beset by empty seats. Clearly, many of the tickes remained on the streets. It presents the dilemma for local organizing committee, who want to fill the seats but are duty-bound at least officially to condemn the scalpers of the black market.

チケットはオリンピック前に売り切れたと言われていましたが、会場には空席が目立ちます。多くのチケットがまだ街頭で出回っているのは明らかです。中国の組織委員会は、席を埋めたいと思いながらも、少なくとも公式にはダフ屋やヤミの売り買いを非難する立場なので、ジレンマに立たされています。


Well there's plenty of tickets available. All you have to do is come down here into the shadow of the Bird's Nest stadium. I 've just been quoted 3,000 RMB for two tickets to the night of the 100 biggest final. That roughly is about £300. You have to buy them in doubles it would seem. And the police pretty much are turning blind eyes to all of it.

チケットは大量に存在しています。「鳥の巣」の近くまで来れば簡単に手に入ります。さきほど値段を聞いてみたところ、100メートル決勝の夜のチケットは2枚で3千元とのことでした。約300ポンド（6万円）です。チケットは2枚単位で買わなければならないようです（←おそらくこの意味だと思いますが、もしかすると「額面の2倍はするようです」かもしれません・・・）。警察は、見て見ぬふりをしています。

London 2012 organizers are on the ground in Beijing and there may well be a lesson here for them. 　

2012年のロンドンオリンピックの組織委員会も北京を視察に訪れていますが、学ぶべきことはありそうです。

It just wasn't meant to be for the US women's gymnastics team although they earned themselves a silver medal spot just behind China. The team finals they know they could have done better.

"They had it in them to win. I know they have the talent. I know they have the mental toughness and unfortunately they just fell apart a little bit on the balance beam" - You could hear the crowd gasp as Alicia Sacramone wobbled and fell completely off the balance beam. - "I'm sure Alicia, when she made the first mistake on beam she was thinking, what is going on? what am I doing?" - And as if that one isn't enough she took another ugly spill on her floor exercise. - "When she went to the floor exercise she made another unlikely error for her. I'm sure she was in the state of shock. You could tell the disappointment and sadness on her face when she stepped off the floor." - And after that there was a chain reaction. One after another the US women continued to make uncharacteristic mistakes. Nastia Liukin and Shawn Johnson were both penalized for stepping out of bounds during their floor exercises. With the Chinese women performing strong, it was just enough to give up the gold.


"It was sad to see it, but I know those girls are going to learn so much from this one experience. And to know they are Olympics silver medalists, not a lot of people can say that. So they definitely need to walk away with their chins held high and be very proud of their performances.

Shawn Johnson and Nastia Liukin will be competing in the individual all-around competition on Friday. Their biggest competitor Cheng Fei of China is out so that it improves their chances in their quest for the gold. (in Beijing Bonny Ghosh, ｔhe Associated Press). 　

have it in one to 〜 は、「〜する素質（能力）がある」という意味だそうです。知らなかったので、この部分は聞き取りに苦労しました。spill は、（馬などからの）「落馬」や「転落」という意味があるそうで、THE FREE DICTIONARY には、spill = a fall from a motorbike, bike, or horse, esp. in a competition と書いてありました。with their chins held high は、「あごを上げて」ですが、日本語に訳すなら「胸を張って」ですね。

You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive という題名のブルーグラスの歌です。歌詞は、Patty Loveless 版はこちらで、Brad Paisley 版はこちらです（ほとんど同じです）。Patty Loveless は、おじいさんもお父さんも炭坑労働者で、お父さんは blacklung disease（黒肺塵症）だったと言っていますね。

ばあさんは土地を安値で売り、パインビルの西、リチャード川の流れる土地の農園に移り住んだ。一族はジグのリズムで踊り、笑いながら、「ハーランを生きて出ることはないなどと、誰が言ったのか？」と新しい歌を歌ったにちがいない。

しかし、苦しい時代がやってきて、タバコが売れなくなった。じいさんは生活のため、炭坑掘りの出稼ぎにハーランへと出かけ、ばあさんに仕送りを続けたが、彼はハーランを生きて出ることはなかった。
