As you probably heard, one of the guys who masterminded the September 11th attacks just announced that he's planning more attacks on us. Last week Al Qaeda's number two guy, Ayman Al-Zawahiri released another audio tape that promised more attacks on Western countries. Sadly, he and his boss have announced numerous audio and video declarations scince the 911 attacks. It just doesn't seem that we are going to be putting a stop to them any time soon. And that just seems really messed up. What the hell happened to catching them and bringing them to justice? And for all you "want it dead or alive" types out there, when I say justice I'm talking about catching these guys and having a public trial that establishes their guilt in front of the world, not locking them away in Guantanamo and torturing the sh** out of them.
But let's take a step back. It's been over six years since these guys masterminded the worst act of mass-murder on US soil ever. We responded by declaring war. OK, "authorizing" war. But since then, nothing? I mean, we beat the Nazis and the Japanese in less than four years, but now what? We are just willing to accept the threat from Bin Ladin, the most wanted dude on the planet drags on? And we are just waiting while these guys continue to plan, recruit, and podcast? Yes, there are million reasons why World War II is different ball of wax. But you know what was also different? Back then, we were fighting for something. Now, what are we fighting for? During his Senate hearings a week ago the best General Petreus could come up with was some half-hearted claims about "national interests". And the thing is, we could be fighting for something. Getting Bin Ladin is something. Showing the world that they can't keep hiding out and tauting US is a definable goal. It can end with certainty. And it's not about colonial reach either. It's about protecting ourselves from the people who did us harm, and the rest of the world will get that, as opposed to the mess we are in now.
