A lone cow grazing through lush green grass. It looks like a typical scene on Argentina's campos, except this cow is sporting a red tank on its back with a tube leading into one of its four stomachs. The bovine backpacker is a part of a study designed to track and reduce the amount of the digested gas methane that cows emit into the atmosphere. With 55 million cows in Argentina, institute researcher doctor ギヤモ・ヴェラ says it's a stinky situation in more ways than one. "Thirty percent of national emissions comes from the emissions generated by cows." The plan is to cut down on the contaminating gas by changing the animal's diet and lifestyle. Still even with all those cows are digesting, Argentina contributes only about half a percent of the world's total greenhouse gasses.
